Sims 4 Custom Content and Mods - How to install, organize and links
Please do not edit the Installation or Organisation sections without asking an admin. However, feel free to add your own links to custom content and Modding websites for The Sims 4, provided they have not already been added!
This guide includes a detail description on how to install custom content/mods, how to organise your Mods folder and links t...o lots of good sites you can find custom content and mods on!
How to install Custom Content and mods (Excluding Sims and Lots)
Please note this is for general custom content and mods. Script (and some other mods) may have specific instructions so make sure to read the details of any custom content or mods you download to check for different installation instructions. For example, many script mods require you to not unzip the file, and just copy the zipped file into the mods folder.
- Download the custom content file
- If the file extension is .rar then you need to "unzip" it:
- Check to see if you have a program that can extract files. You can do this by right-clicking on the file with a .rar at the end and selecting "Extract Here". Your .rar file should now be a .package file. If you don’t have the option to extract it, then you need to download a program. One of the best ones is 7-Zip, so type 7-zip into google or visit this site: http://www.7-zip.org/ and download and follow the install instructions to install it.
- If your file is not a .rar file then it should be a .package file, providing it is custom content and mods which means you don't need to unzip it, as it has already been done. Please note that if you are downloading a set, occasionally creators may put all their items in thier own folder, and you can either keep them in this folder or cut and paste them out of it.
- After unzipping your file (if neccesary), go to libraries->Documents->Electronic Arts->The Sims 4(Or your custom pathway if you installed The Sims 4 elsewhere)
- Right click on the Mods folder and click properties. Then under the General tab untick the "Read-only" box and click apply.
- Open the Mods folder up and copy and paste your file into it. Please note, you will see a file called "Resource.cfg" which you need to keep for your custom content and mods to work.
- Load up The Sims 4 then go to Options then the "Other" tab and select "Enable script Mods"
- Restart The Sims 4
- Your custom content should now appear in-game
Please note, some items, especially clothing may be "hidden" inside an EA clothing item, just with an extra clothing swatch. So if you cannot find your item, either check the details that the creator provided for the item (they may include whereabouts in-game to find your custom content) or search through all the EA items and colours.
Some CAS items do not inlcude filters, so you need to get rid of the filter to see some items by clicking the 'x' next to the clothing category.
How to install Custom Content Sims and Lots
- Download the Custom content
- It should include a range of files with a mix of seeminlgy meanless numbers and letters, with various extensions (.blueprint, .bpi and .trayitem etc.). If it comes inside a folder, open up the folder.

- Open up the tray folder and cut and paste all the files from that download into the tray folder. There will probably already be files in the tray folder, but ignore these.

- Restart The Sims 4
- Your custom content should now be in-game to add to your households or world via manage worlds
How to organize your Mods folder
If you download a large amount of custom content and/or mods, you may find your folder gets a bit unorganised. This can be a problem if you find your game crashes or has errors and you are trying to identify which item is which, so you can remove the corrupt content. It is a good idea to keep a record or organise your Mods folder.
Inside the mod folder, you can add new folders (called subfolders). These could be:
- Clothing, shoes, accessories, objects...
- By creator names
- By websites
- Theme
etc.
Then you can simply move your custom content into the applicable folder, making it easier to find.
Alternatively, you could create a table or spreadsheet to record the details of each item you download, things you could record include:
- Item Name
- Website/URL
- Creator
- Type (CAS, Mod, build mode etc.)
- File name
- File extension
Another thing you could do is save a picture for each item you download, then save it as the same name as the actual custom content's file name. This way, you can easily identify what each file is by looking at the picture with the same name.
Not only is this beneficial for corrupt content, but if someone asks you where they can find a cool piece of CC or a mod you used, you can easily find it and let them know!
Adding Sub-folders to the Mods folder
Naturally you can only add 1 deep folders in the mods folder (so like Mods>clothes then not further) , however, this is useless if you really want to organise your folders.
To add more simply backup the open the resoruce.cfg file (also seen as the resoruce file in the mods folder) remove was it says then add this (this allows 5 deep follow the pattern for more)
